The flexibility promise drew me to RoomChecking and some of it held up: the workflows really are configurable in ways bigger tools don't allow. Two things stopped it being a stronger recommendation. The first is localisation, and for an English hotel with Polish, Romanian, Portuguese and Spanish speakers on the housekeeping team, this matters more than any feature. Parts of the interface are hardcoded in French or English and can't be translated at all. The parts that are translated read like machine output nobody native checked; my Romanian housekeeper understood her screen, barely, but she had to work it out rather than glance and know. The second is scale: eight to eleven employees serving 600 properties is a ratio that works until something goes wrong. The housekeeping tools we've paid for and run at our own hotels are below.

    Hotelkit was built in Salzburg by a hotelier who got frustrated running his own 50-room property. Bootstrapped, Austrian-owned, 4,000+ hotels. I tested it across my three Austrian properties. The sovereignty story is real. So are the weak spots.

    Flexkeeping does housekeeping operations well and the ROI numbers from large groups are hard to argue with. But the Mews acquisition changes the calculus for anyone not on Mews, and the absence of public API documentation tells me something about where this product is heading.

What is the best alternative to RoomChecking?

If your team is multilingual, Sweeply is the one I'd test first: it leans on colour-coded visual boards rather than text, which sidesteps the translation problem instead of solving it badly. Hoxell is the other European option, though it comes with a thinner set of references and won't publish a price.

Is there a housekeeping tool that works better for multilingual staff?

Look for tools that reduce their dependence on text at all. The reason Sweeply's colour-coding works is that a room attendant doesn't need to read a sentence to know what a board is telling her. Whatever you shortlist, test it with the actual languages your team speaks, because a vendor listing twelve supported languages tells you nothing about whether the translations are usable.

Is RoomChecking's small team a risk?

It cuts both ways and I'd be fair about it. Both times I contacted support I had a useful answer within hours from someone who clearly built the thing, which beats most larger vendors. The concern is what happens at 800 or 1,200 properties, because that support experience doesn't scale without hiring, and hiring looks unlikely on flat revenue. It's a reason for caution, not a reason to rule it out.
