Akia vs Canary Technologies

The facts side by side, what each one costs tier by tier, and which of the two we'd pick. Both have been paid for and run at a working European hotel.

The short version

Both land on 5/10 overall, so the choice comes down to fit rather than our scores.

Akia is built for US hotels wanting AI-driven guest messaging. Canary Technologies is built for large US hotel chains wanting a full guest management suite.

Which we'd pick

Canary if you need the suite, Akia if you need the messaging, and neither if you are in Europe.

Marc reviewed both and rated both a 5, for the same underlying reason: no EU data hosting at any price. Canary keeps passport scans under US jurisdiction and the CLOUD Act, and Marc's reading is that the UK entity offers no protection, since post-Brexit Britain is not the EU and the parent is in San Francisco either way. Akia has the same problem with less scale behind it.

On product they split cleanly. Canary is a full guest management suite with a polished contactless check-in, an upselling module US colleagues say drives real revenue, and 20,000-plus properties behind it, but its guest messaging is an afterthought with AI the users call robotic. Akia is messaging-first and the AI is better: 85% accuracy in English across Marc's 40-query test, and a late-checkout automation that negotiated, priced and booked without staff touching it. Akia has no Booking.com or Expedia integration, so if your guests arrive through OTAs you are missing half the conversation, and its WhatsApp setup is difficult enough that users call it very complicated.

What each one costs

Akia pricing

Basic Quote only
Tier exists with a feature list and usage limits attached, but no price, no currency and no billing terms. Ends at talk to sales.
Pro Quote only
Same again: the features are visible, the cost is not.
Max Quote only
Top tier, also quote only. Every route out of the pricing page goes to sales or a demo booking.

Akia has stopped publishing the per-room rate our review recorded. The $5 per room per month figure is gone from the pricing page, replaced by three named tiers with their features intact and their prices removed. The tier structure is genuinely useful, so you can still work out what you would be buying. You just cannot work out what it costs, which for a tool whose appeal to smaller American properties rested on an affordable per-room price is a strange thing to take away.

Canary Technologies pricing

Core Quote only
Mobile check-in, guest messaging and the digital compendium. Get quote.
Advanced Quote only
Adds AI messaging responses, tablet registration, dynamic upsells at 0% commission, digital tipping and smart checkout.
Pro Quote only
Adds AI webchat. Unlimited users, data and support are stated as included on every subscription, which is the one commercial detail Canary does publish.

Canary has never published a price and still does not. What has changed since our review is that the roughly $99 a month entry reference we recorded is no longer anywhere on the pricing page, so even the rough starting figure has gone. The three tiers are clearly described and every one of them ends in a get quote button. For a company of Canary's size, with over 20,000 properties and $175M raised, declining to state a single number is a choice rather than a constraint.

Prices as last verified during each review. Hotel software pricing moves, and per-room rates behave very differently at 20 rooms and at 200, so run the arithmetic at your own room count. Full detail on Akia pricing and Canary Technologies pricing.
